SENTENARYO '96 CALL

TO THE MASS MEDIA

NE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE a member of the mass media to appreciate, at least partially, the mass media as a potent player in information dissemination and opinion leadership. Even the Katipunan leaders of a hundred years ago were well-rewarded after they labored for months to produce the copies of the first and only published issue of Kalayaan : KKK membership increased exponentially! Media value had earlier been grasped by our expatriate patriots who advanced the Propaganda Movement in Europe.

The importance of the media in any popular campaign has increased also exponentially since that time, and especially in the last few decades. It is for this reason that Kamalaysayan (Kampanya para sa Kamalayan sa Kasaysayan) has been paying attention to media work, specifically in the form of a syndicated column, a radio program, regular news service releases, and occasional feature and analytical articles.

Now that we are straining all efforts to reach tens of millions of Filipinos with the Sentenaryo '96 message and mobilize them at least in spreading the word to the rest of the population, we are making a direct appeal to leading editors in the print and broadcast media to carry the following messages to our broad citizenry:

"August 23-30, 1996 is the centennial of the birth of our nation in the 1896 Philippine Revolution."

"The 100th birth anniversary of our nation deserves to be commemorated by all who belong to this nation, wherever they may be in this archipelago or in the world. All of us have reason to join in at least one commemorative activity or other Sali tayong lahat!"

"The Kataas-taasang Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan that led the Revolution was a highly spiritual, moral and ethical force that drew its philosophy from the indigenous spirituality and culture, from the protest Christianity of the Hermano Pule tradition, and also from humanist and democratic ideas from the West. The spirit of the Katipunan is enshrined in the Kartilya and other KKK documents."

"In August 1996, the Katipuneros did not only have the 'Cry at Balintawak' and cedula-tearing; they also transformed the Katipunan from a secret association into a national government with a president (Andres Bonifacio), a Cabinet, an armed force, and territorial people's councils."

"The 1896 Revolution succeeded in ending 333 years of Spanish rule. That this victory was later stolen by the United States invasion and occupation forces does not negate that victory was won in the first place."

"This time of commemorating Sentenaryo '96 is a good time for enhancing the people's sense of history and sense of nationhood."

How about it, my brothers and sisters in the profession? Can we see and hear these messages in the media's pages and airlanes come August 23? A pooled editorial would be even better, for the magnitude of impact that the historic occasion deserves to have.
