He was accused of causing division in the ranks of the Katipunan of which he founded. He was meted out the death sentence by a military court formed by his enemy, Emilio Aguinaldo. Aguinaldo declared that the punishment handed to Bonifacio was merely expulsion from Cavite, however he made a secret command (written in a sealed letter) to kill Andres Bonifacio and his brother Procopio before they could leave the confines of Cavite.
